4) Philodendron Squamiferum

If you’re a fan of tropical plants and pretty foliage then you’ve no doubt heard of the genus Philodendron (and probably already own a few of these showy houseplants). There are so many different Philodendron varieties and cultivars out there it’s hard to resist the temptation to try and collect them all! For anyone scratching their head right now wondering how they’re possibly going to fit an adult squamiferum into their home, no worries. This isn’t like a Monstera deliciosa and won’t take over your house over the course of a few months: Philodendron squamiferum has a relatively modest growth rate.

Philodendron

Philodendron is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. As of September 2015, the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families accepted 489 species; other sources accept different numbers. Regardless of number of species, the genus is after the Anthurium (over 1.000 species) the second-largest member of the family Araceae.

Mangaves do really well in a container and are very easy to look after. Not only outdoors, but indoors as well. As long as you give them enough light. Because it’s the UV light that gives the Mangaves beautiful colors. And you know what? You don’t even have to water them if you don’t want to! If you do, they grow fast, if you don’t, they stay kind of dormant. Of course, everyone would suggest actually giving them water, because who doesn’t want to have bigger plants? Also known as road kill cactus, it can grow as a tree up to 20 ft tall. This one of a kind Opuntia has a pretty flat and interesting body texture, soft and almost spineless. It has a slight and bright silver color. A unique characteristic is an interesting wrinkle at one of the top sides of the plant.

Opuntia

Opuntia is a very large genus of cacti, varying in size from 2 inches tall (5 cm) miniature plants to 100 feet tall (30 m) trees. They are native from Canada, to Chile and Argentina. The genus has been split several times, but there doesn't seem to be a consensus yet on the best way to do that. The name Opuntia comes from the name of a Greek city. All Opuntias not only have normal spines, but they also have thin barbed spines barely visible, named glochids. These can get stuck in your skin and be very irritating. In some species, they are particularly light and can become airborne when the Opuntia is moved. Wetting the plant before handling it might be good prevention. Opuntias often have large, colorful flowers. The fruit is also large and generally edible

16) Euphorbia Trigona 'Rubra'

One of the best plants for fall 2020is for sure the African Milk Tree cactus (Euphorbia trigona). This  is a tall, rugged, easy-care plant with thorns. It should come as no surprise that many people think of it as an African cactus. The African Milk Tree plant is a member of the genus Euphorbia part of the family Euphorbaceae. All of these plants exude a poisonous white sap when cut or broken. For this reason, it’s a good idea to keep them out of the reach of kids and pets and to keep your skin and eyes well-protected when pruning, repotting or otherwise handling the euphorbia cactus. The sap can cause serious skin and eye irritation on contact, as well as severe gastric distress if ingested.

17) Dracaena Sanderiana Celles

There are six common varieties of dracaena most often found at greenhouses: marginata (tall, thin plants), sanderiana (lucky bamboo plant), fragrans (corn plant), deremensis (green plant, e.g. Janet Craig), draco and cinnibari. This is one of the Sanderiana species, and new as a houseplant. Like our other hard to kill houseplant options these plants can tolerate low light levels and the odd missed watering. They do require a mix of sun and shade, so do not place them in direct sunlight. Lower leaves will yellow as the plant grows, remove these, the trunk will scar over. Of course another sign of yellow leaves could be over watering.

18) Cyperus Glabor

Cyperus glaber forms high triangular stems on which dense clusters of yellow-green round flower spikes bloom at the top. As all other Cyperus, it requires moist to wet, and very fertile soil. This houseplant is very unique and its the only plant which can not (99% of the time) be killed by overwatering. Theoretically, Cyperus is actually a pond or aquatic plant which resembles water reeds. It's very adapted to having its roots completely surrounded by water at all times and ultimately this is something that's needed if you want a good looking Cyperus. It grows just as well indoors as it does in a pond as long as you ensure the roots are kept constantly wet. Although you must not underwater this plant at anytime, in all other ways Umbrella Grass is actually a very easy houseplant. It copes well with a range of light and temperature levels, grows quickly and is easily propagated. So if you become a fan it's very easy to grow more plants or give them away as unusual presents as one of the best plants for fall 2020!

20) Asplenium Green Miracle

The Asplenium has the Dutch name Nest Fern and is native to Africa, Australia, Asia and Europe. The plant has an apple-green leaf color owes its name to the growth habit, in which the long leaves slowly roll out from the center. The presence of the Asplenium therefore does not go unnoticed. The Asplenium is particularly air-purifying. The larger the leaf surface, the better the plant is able to extract substances from the air and convert them into clean oxygen.

Most of these so called 'rhizomatous begonias' are grown for their interesting foliage, varied in colour and pattern. 'Black Fang' sports flowers that are small, pink in colour with dark pink spots. 22) Calathea Musaica 'Network'

The Calathea Musaica Network is a real eye-catcher. Once you have a close look at the graphic, very detailed leaf pattern, it’s almost hard to believe it’s all mother nature’s work.

Calathea

Calathea are wonderful, highly decorative foliage plants with air-purifying qualities too. There are many species available all of which need a little care and attention for them to appear at their best. Calathea is closely related to the Maranta (Prayer Plant) and both are known and loved for their impressive, ornamental foliage, which opens with the morning light and closes again at night time. Calathea originate from the tropical Americas. Think warm and humid, with bright diffused sunlight filtering through the canopy and you have a good idea of the sort of environment in which Calathea will thrive best. Replicate this as far as you can in your home and you will be rewarded with a magnificent plant. The superb markings on the leaves are the main focal point. Simply house in a plain ceramic pot and let the plant do the rest to create an eye-catching display!

Calathea Crimson is a stunning Calathea variety. Deep pink centered leaves with a deep green-black border.Native to north-western regions of Brazil, the plant is commonly known as the rose-painted calathea because of the pink-colored stripes on its leaves. The scientific name of the plant also refers to the rose-colored stripes as well as to the shape of its flowers. Calathea means basket, referring to the shape of inflorescence, and roseopicta means rose painted.

24) Aglaomorpha Coronans 'Jim'

This shoutout goes to the Aglaomorpha Fern! Also referred to as a basket fern. This is still quite a rare fern that we haven’t seen come through very often, but there's a Dutch grower now supplying it in larger volumes! Its leaves are rather stiff, and just look at all that personality! It is for sure a very beautiful, tropical epiphytic fern with large deeply segmented ‘fronds’ with red midribs. Native to Thailand, but makes a great houseplant.

25) Ctenante Oppenheimmiana

One of my favs, as I bought this beauty lately as well, as one of the best plants for fall 2020, the Ctenante Oppenheimmiana, a.k.a. the Never never Plant. The silver and green striped foliage of the Never Never Plant makes for a beautiful display, made even more dramatic when it folds its leaves up at night showing off the red undersides of its leaves. The accepted botanical name is Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, but is also often referred to as Calathea oppenheimiana. It's commonly known as Never Never Plant, Giant Bamburanta. As a member of the Prayer Plant family, it's non-toxic to pets.
