Cut Flowers Now on the markets

Have you ever seen flowers that start so humble and then open so majestically? The Amaryllis is some cut flower to behold, and now is the time to get them. For me, this meant I had to go and see a grower and ask him all about this astounding flower. Not just any grower, but Van der Ende, masters of Amaryllis.

In the town of Maasdijk—at a stone's throw from the Naaldwijk flower auction—, Van der Ende Flowers is a beacon of expertise and passion in the cultivation of Amaryllis. What started as a small operation in 1990, led by Simon van der Ende, has grown into a flourishing family business. Today, Simon’s sons, Martijn and Gerard, carry on the legacy with a blend of traditional practices and innovative techniques that keep their cut flowers at the forefront of the market. I'm here to talk to Martijn about this passion while learning about production and how to keep my Amaryllis flowers going for a long time.

Van der Ende started as a Freesia grower, but in 1990 Martijn's father Simon decided that Amaryllis was a better option. It was a bold move, but one that paid off in spades. In 1997, Martijn joined the business after completing his studies, followed soon after by his brother Gerard. Together, they expanded the company’s vision, building on the solid foundation their father laid.

The expansion of this popular cut flower was inevitable. What started out with just 3 varieties has already grown to an impressive 28 varieties, ranging from large, bold blooms to delicate, double-flowered beauties. One of their standout achievements is the introduction of cybister varieties—flowers with intricate, spider-like forms. Implementing this product group marks the dedication to innovation at Van der Ende.

The Art of Amaryllis Cultivation

Cultivating Amaryllis, botanically also known as Hippeastrum, is no small feat. At Van der Ende Flowers, the process is a year-long of hard work, starting in January when the bulbs are planted. These bulbs are carefully nurtured through the growing phase, which lasts until July. It’s during this time that the magic begins—the buds start forming within the bulbs, setting the stage for the stunning blooms to come.

Next comes the preparation phase, which spans ten weeks. The flower beds are maintained at a consistent 13°C, storing warmth in the soil and ensuring optimal conditions for the bulbs. After this crucial period, the foliage is removed, allowing the plants to focus all their energy on the flowers. Eight weeks later, the Amaryllis is ready for harvest, delivering vibrant blooms that are as hardy as they are beautiful.

This meticulous process takes place across 10 hectares of state-of-the-art greenhouse space, where every plant receives the care and attention it deserves. The result? Amaryllis of unparalleled quality, available from late September all the way until May.
