Located right in the fertile plains and the rolling hills just inland from the Mediterranean Sea, Massarosa is known for its striking and often mysterious natural beauty, as well as historic attractions and hamlets. The commune, part of the province of Lucca, in Northern Tuscany, Italy, is from where Nori Fiori—has, since mid-2021, supplied their clients with fresh greens and flowers, preserved products, and dried flowers.

The main focus, however, is on the different varieties of Eucalyptus. Adomex International, the largest Dutch importer, and specialist of all sorts of decoration green and cut foliage in Europe, offers to the market a wide range of popular florist greens, mostly through its Orca label. From Nori Fiori this supplier gets varieties like Eucalyptus Cinerea—a unique and charming variety—as well as Eucalyptus Parvofolia, for the renowned OrcaGreen assortment.

Darryl Bouman, the founder of Nori Europe SRL, indicates that, with his small, young, and dedicated team, they source all these floral products from their location in the picturesque Massarosa—which is part of the Tuscan Riviera area of Versilia that stretches from the seaside commune of Viareggio inland through to the village of Quiesa—delivering these cut greens in pristine condition to Adomex.

Being within the central region of Italy, and therefore also near the country's different production areas, gives Nori Fiori many advantages, which allow them to create a perfect logistic chain from growers to the Netherlands and other European countries.

Darryl Bouman:

"But much more importantly it helps to create long-term and sustainable relationships with our growers, especially with a fast-moving world, constantly changing weather influences, and higher production costs. We see it as our common responsibility to cooperate with our growers, to find clients for their products in the best way possible."

Eucalyptus Cinerea, known colloquially as the Silver Dollar Tree for its round, silvery-gray leaves, or also as the Argyle Apple, is a variety that thrives in Tuscany’s temperate environment. Due to its numerous exquisite qualities, perfect for floral designs, arrangements, and bouquets, this variety is among the most beloved items in florists' kits. Unlike wild Eucalyptus, which grows as towering trees in their native Australia, Nori Fiori’s Eucalyptus shrubs are carefully pruned to about one meter in height after each harvest season, which encourages vigorous regrowth, ensuring a continuous supply of young, supple branches ideal for cut foliage.

Darryl Bouman:

"From the beginning, we have had a strong collaboration with Adomex to supply them with the best greens available during the season, which is roughly from September to April. This means that we supply Adomex with the different types of Eucalyptus, such as Eucalyptus Cinerea, Eucalyptus Parvifolia, and Eucalyptus Populus with Berries. Because of this strong relationship, we created an effective way of working and better understanding each other's needs."

Nori Fiori certainly meets the stringent criteria put in place by Adomex, it is no wonder they are one of the Dutch floral greens specialist's suppliers. The company's location in Massarosa provides ideal growing conditions for the different varieties of Eucalyptus, contributing to the consistent high quality that defines the OrcaGreen brand. In Nori Fiori, Adomex found a worthy partner with the right credentials to deliver the Eucalyptus and other varieties in sufficient quantities and perfect quality, all through the year.

Darryl Bouman:

"With all these products, from different areas and all cultivated in open fields, it’s a challenge to find consistency in the quality of our product range during the season. From this point, we are proud to be one of their (Adomex) OrcaGreen partners for some of our products. Depending on the product we select together the right grower and period that underlines these main values. Also, to minimize the environmental impact and maximize freshness, transportation always departs directly from our grower to the different locations of Adomex. We have been an Orca partner since last year, and have supplied Eucalyptus Cinerea, Parvifolia, and Populus with Berries; all with the new OrcaGreen sleeves."

The Design-Versatile, Fragrant and Fast-Growing Eucalyptus

While the aromatic Eucalyptus originates from Australia where it grows naturally as a medium-sized tree or shrub, the cultivated Eucalyptus cinerea and its counterparts are a particularly nurtured fast-growing species, making them for the most part suitable for cut foliage production. They are now cultivated as smaller shrubs in countries like Italy, Portugal, and South Africa. Growers simply trim the mature branches from the shrubs. And, at the end of each season, the shrubs are pruned back to approximately one meter in height, after which new branches regrow.

With its subtle, fresh menthol scent and slightly whimsical appearance, Eucalyptus cinerea, in particular, is an ideal cut foliage for floral arrangements and bouquets. Its silvery-gray, rounded leaves feature a delicate waxy coating, often creating a striking contrast against flowers, fillers, and other greenery. Practically in any floral creation in which they are used, the leaves of this foliage provide a luxurious, playful, and natural effect, enhancing both texture and visual harmony.

Adomex focuses on acquiring the highest-quality floral greens and thus, intentionally works with Nori Fiori; maintaining significant control over the entire production process: from plant care and harvesting to bundling, ensuring that customers consistently receive cut Eucalyptus of top OrcaGreen quality.

Adomex:

“Our Eucalyptus Cinerea Long Orca variety has a length of 70 centimeters and a weight of approximately 300 grams per bunch. This cut foliage is available year-round, provided we can guarantee OrcaGreen standards. However, there, sometimes are seasonal fluctuations in availability, particularly between April and August, which are managed through careful crop rotation, ensuring that OrcaGreen’s year-round supply commitments remain intact.”

Why Eucalyptus Is Every Florist’s Versatile Tool

Known for its silvery-dollar foliage and delicate menthol aroma, the visual poetry of the Eucalyptus Cinerea lies in its near-dichotomy—soft yet structured. Each circular leaf, dusted with a waxy, silvery patina, reflects light, creating contrast against both bold flowers and subtle fillers. Plus, this plant's subdued menthol fragrance and whimsical form offer quite an experience, while its structural versatility allows florists to experiment with different design elements.

The silvery-gray leaves of this cut evergreen, also, act as a natural foil for other more vibrant flowers in an arrangement. Their waxy cuticle reflects light, creating a luminous contrast against flowers like roses and peonies, or tropical and exotic florals like Proteas. This allows florists using it, to easily create cascading bouquets or minimalist installations. When paired with roses, for instance, it frames petals with bucolic and rustic elegance, while alongside other tropical or exotic flowers, it brings out a wild, untamed edge to the arrangement.

Also, quite unlike bulkier greens like Leatherleaf Fern, which provides a robust base for arrangements, Eucalyptus introduces an airy, flowing effect. Florists can, therefore, weave its easily pliable stems through bouquets to add movement or layer it beneath bolder flowers for a minimalist, organic aesthetic. Accordingly, for floral designers seeking a versatile, and ethically sourced accent, this cut green comes in handy, and even goes beyond the contemporary trends. And, to crown it, the collaboration between Nori Fiori and Adomex enhances its availability, accessibility, and usability as a staple in modern floral design.
