National Orchid Day Celebrates One of Nature's Most Beautiful Flowers

Every year on the 16th of April, orchid lovers come together to appreciate the beauty and diversity of one of nature's most lovely floral creations: the orchid. National Orchid Day is dedicated to celebrating these fascinating flowering plants, known for their fabulous colors, on-fleek shapes, and scents. But do you know all about these flowers? Or the history behind the National Orchid Day, the importance of these flowers, and why people across the world just love them so much?

A Brief History of National Orchid Day

Orchids belong to the family Orchidaceae, and are a widespread family of flowering plants, with colorful and fragrant petals. National Orchid Day was created in 2015 by a South Carolina couple, Mike and Faith Young, in remembrance of their daughter, who passed away the previous year.

The couple fell in love with orchids while volunteering at an orchid reserve in Mexico, and they decided that if they ever had a daughter, they would name her 'Orchid'. They had a daughter, but she died while in labor. Following that loss, the couple wanted to honor the day and celebrate her memory with their favorite flower.

So they decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds needed to register for this special day. They offered pre-orders for their backyard honey, The Humble Bumbles Honey, and within hours of starting, had raised the required $1,500 and registered 'National Orchid Day'.

Mike and Faith plan to spend the rest of their lives caring for and raising awareness about orchids. They believe that by establishing a National Orchid Day to honor the beautiful lives lost, people all over the world will appreciate orchids even more, and their little girl will feel the warmth of those who remember orchids on that day.

They Belong to a Diverse Family of Plants

There are over 25,000 species of orchids and more than 100,000 hybrids, making them one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants. This diversity means that orchids can be found in a wide range of habitats, from tropical rainforests to arid deserts. Orchids also play a crucial role in their ecosystems, with many species relying on specific pollinators for reproduction, creating fascinating relationships within the natural world.

Orchid Affairs – The Secret Life of Pollination

Orchids pollinate using a variety of mechanisms, many of which are specialized. Their elaborate floral designs and fragrances attract specific pollinators, such as insects, birds, and mammals. Orchids play an important role in many ecosystems' pollination networks, helping numerous plant species reproduce successfully.

Symbolism of the Mighty Orchid

Orchids carry meaning and symbolism. Their appearance makes them one of the most desirable plants to gift. The orchid symbolizes love, luxury, beauty, and strength, making it the most sought-after ornamental plant.

In ancient Greece, orchids were associated with virility. Greek women believed that feeding their unborn child large, new orchid tubers would result in a boy. If the mother consumed small orchid tubers, she would give birth to a girl.

The orchid is also a symbol of beauty, refinement, fertility, thoughtfulness, and maturity. Orchids have become a major global market. Buyers are now bidding hundreds of dollars for new or improved hybrids, making orchids one of the most popular cut flowers on the market.

Cultural Significance

Orchids hold deep cultural, symbolic, and even spiritual value across the world. In China, they are admired for their poise and are symbols of virtue and nobility, often appearing in traditional paintings and poetry, particularly among scholars. The great philosopher Confucius likened the orchid to a virtuous person.

In Japan, orchids were once reserved for the elite, including the Samurai and royalty, and continue to represent wealth, strength, and refinement. In Thailand, orchids are not only a beloved part of daily life but also a national symbol, commonly used in religious offerings, weddings, and given as respectful gifts. Thailand is also one of the leading global exporters of orchids.

Moving to the Americas, Colombia is known for its extraordinary orchid diversity, and its national flower, the 'Cattleya trianae', symbolizes resilience and national pride. In Mexico, the vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifolia) has ancient roots in Aztec culture, where vanilla was used in rituals and ceremonial drinks.

In Europe, particularly during the Victorian era in England, orchids became a symbol of luxury and mystery. The craze for collecting rare orchids, known as 'orchid fever', swept across the upper class. Historically, in Ancient Greece, orchids were associated with fertility and masculinity, and their very name, derived from the Greek word orchis, reflects this.

Conservation Efforts

Unfortunately, many orchid species are at risk due to habitat loss, climate change, and over-collection. FAQ

Why is National Orchid Day celebrated on April 16th?

National Orchid Day falls on April 16th because of a deeply personal story. The day was created in 2015 by a South Carolina couple, Mike and Faith Young, in remembrance of their daughter who passed away the previous year. The roots of this bittersweet holiday trace back to 2010, when the couple volunteered at an orchid reserve in San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico – an experience that touched them so deeply they decided to name their daughter Orchid Faith.

Unfortunately, their daughter died on April 16th, 2014. To honor her, they launched a Kickstarter campaign, offering pre-orders of their backyard honey. Within the first day, they met their $1,500 goal, and April 16th was officially registered as National Orchid Day through the Official National Day Registrar.

How many species of orchids exist, and where do they grow?

Orchids are one of the most diverse plant families on Earth. Scientists estimate there are between 25,000 and 30,000 different orchid species worldwide, with around 10,000 found in the tropics alone. Along with the Asteraceae (daisy family), orchids are one of the two largest families of flowering plants. They range dramatically in size – from the 2.1 mm wide Platystele jungermannioides to the broad-bloomed Grammatophyllum speciosum.

Orchids can be found on every continent except Antarctica, thriving in diverse habitats from humid rainforests to arid deserts and even high-altitude mountains. A single orchid seedpod can contain up to three million seeds, showing just how prolific these plants are.

What do orchids symbolize, and why are they culturally significant?

Orchids carry rich symbolism across many cultures and eras. They represent love, beauty, strength, and luxury. In ancient Greece, they were associated with virility and fertility, while in Victorian England, they were rare and expensive, often gifted to express deep affection and admiration.

Throughout history, orchids have represented some of the highest human virtues. Today, their varied colors each carry different meanings, making them one of the most versatile flowers for personal expression. Beyond aesthetics, orchids even have culinary ties – the vanilla bean comes from a species within the orchid plant family.

Are orchids difficult to grow at home?

Orchids have a reputation for being tricky, but with the right knowledge, many varieties are quite manageable. The most common reason orchids fail to bloom is insufficient light – not too much darkness, since many orchids evolved as epiphytes to take advantage of brighter light in the upper forest canopy. Bright, indirect light from an eastern or southern window is ideal, and leaf color is a reliable indicator: bright green leaves signal a healthy, happy plant.

When it comes to watering, far more orchids are killed from over-watering than from being too dry. When you water, drench the pot thoroughly and drain completely, and never let the plant sit in water. For beginners, Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilum, and Cattleya cultivars are relatively easy to grow, as they have been selectively bred to be vigorous under indoor conditions.

Why is orchid conservation important, and how can people help?

Many orchid species face serious threats in the wild. Unfortunately, many orchid species are at risk due to habitat loss, climate change, and over-collection. National Orchid Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about conserving these unique plants and their habitats. With good care, an orchid plant may live for a lifetime – 100 years or more – which underscores how valuable each plant can be.

Orchids are believed to be one of the oldest families of flowering plants, thought to have existed before the continents separated. People can help by supporting botanical gardens, purchasing from reputable growers rather than wild-collected sources, and using the hashtag #NationalOrchidDay on social media to spread awareness each April 16th.
