What does it take to transform the floral industry? David Marin, the Director of Deliflor Americas, has experienced this journey firsthand. His career encompasses mass consumption, entrepreneurship, and floriculture, and he has propelled Deliflor to impressive new levels. Recently honored as the Young International Grower of the Year 2025 by AIPH, this accolade reflects his skill and dedication to breeding and cultivating Chrysanthemums.

Question 1

For those who don’t know you, who are you, and what do you do?

"My name is David Marin. I am a business administrator with a specialization in marketing from EAFIT University. I am also a husband to Maria Paulina and father to Pedro and Miguel. My professional journey began in the mass consumption sector, where I worked with NOEL for three years. I later transitioned into entrepreneurship, spending twelve years managing Bioflora and other ventures related to the flower and pharmaceutical industries. These included post-harvest machinery, lily bulb production, and aluminum and magnesium hydroxide manufacturing.

Following my entrepreneurial experience, I joined Deliflor as director for the Americas. Over the past six years, I have had the privilege of leading the company while continuously learning about this dynamic industry. My passion for agriculture and floriculture was deeply influenced by my father. From my university years onward, we worked together on various agricultural and floral projects. Even now, in his retirement, we continue to share the same enthusiasm for the industry."

What is so special about your job?

"My role offers a fascinating and rewarding experience. Every day, I have the opportunity to explore new floral varieties, engage with diverse individuals, and visit different countries and markets. The industry is highly dynamic, presenting exciting challenges in areas such as customer relations, technological advancements, and sustainability. At Deliflor, relationship-building and continuous learning play a fundamental role, alongside the privilege of working with flowers and appreciating their beauty daily."

Are there any specific challenges or obstacles you’ve faced at work, and how did you overcome them?

"Challenges are a constant in this industry. The key to overcoming them lies in teamwork, trust, and loyalty. Having a strong, committed team ensures that even the most complex challenges can be successfully navigated.

Two significant challenges in my career include managing company operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and overseeing the construction of our new headquarters, 'Deliflor Americas'. Both required strategic planning, resilience, and collaboration."

What are the threats in the industry, and if so, do you have any solutions for them?

"The floral industry in our country faces several critical challenges, including labor shortages, economic and political relations with key markets, exchange rate fluctuations, and technological advancements. One of the most effective solutions is fostering unity within the industry. Strengthening our collective efforts and leveraging shared resources will enhance competitiveness and drive sustainable value creation for the country."

How has technology, such as e-commerce platforms or digital marketing, affected your industry? What strategies have you employed to stay competitive?

"Deliflor is a company driven by technology and information. Innovations such as artificial intelligence allow us to accelerate the development of new floral varieties, enhancing the value we offer to our clients. Through advanced hybridization techniques, we collaborate with customers to create resilient flower varieties—balancing profitability, aesthetic appeal for consumers, and logistical adaptability for land, air, and maritime transportation."

Who (in or outside the floral industry) is an inspiring example to you? And Why?

"I have been fortunate to have three mentors whose tenacity, integrity, and humility have profoundly influenced my professional and personal development. My father and Felipe have played essential roles in shaping my career. Additionally, I find great inspiration from our clients. Their innovative business models and Colombian floriculture's resilience are remarkable examples of dedication and excellence."

How do you handle stress or difficult moments in your life?

"Achieving balance remains a continuous learning process for me. However, spending time with my family and disconnecting from my natural surroundings has been instrumental in maintaining perspective. Being authentic and expressing myself transparently has also helped me navigate complex situations and make sound decisions during challenging times."

What has been the best (floral or non-floral) news for you lately, or of the last year?

"The inauguration of Deliflor Americas and a recent industry awards have been particularly meaningful milestones. These achievements represent the culmination of years of dedication and hard work. When one operates with a clear purpose, results often arrive sooner than expected."

Which is your favorite flower/plant and why is it good for you?

"My favorite flower is the Magnum variety—a large, resilient, and long-lasting chrysanthemum bred by Deliflor. It is a striking and impactful flower that stands out in any floral arrangement."
