Knowing what fertilizer to apply and when can make the difference between an average lawn and one that stands out all year long. Many homeowners want a simple lawn fertilizer schedule they can follow without guessing. The good news is that a great lawn care program does not have to be complicated.

At Lawn Synergy, we like to keep it simple and effective. The best approach is to understand your lawn type first. Most lawns fall into one of two categories: cool-season lawns and warm-season lawns. Each has different growth habits, different seasonal needs, and a slightly different fertilizer schedule.

In this guide, we will walk you through a step-by-step plan for both lawn types so you know exactly what to apply and when for the best results. Here you can read more about: 5 Tips for Lawn Care and Maintenance

Start by Knowing Your Lawn Type

Before applying fertilizer, it is important to know whether you have a cool-season lawn or a warm-season lawn.

Cool-season lawns are common in northern and transition zone areas and often include grasses like:

These grasses grow most actively in spring and fall.

Warm-season lawns are common in southern areas and often include:

These grasses thrive in the heat and grow most actively from late spring through summer.

Once you know your grass type, choosing the right fertilizer schedule becomes much easier.

Cool-Season Lawn Fertilizer Schedule

If you have a cool-season lawn, your fertilizer program should focus on weed prevention in early spring, stress protection through summer, and strong recovery in fall.

Step 1: Early Spring Application

Apply Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer

The first application for cool-season lawns should happen early in spring, before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees. This timing is critical because it helps prevent crabgrass and other spring weeds before they germinate. Don’t wait until the last minute; apply early.

Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer does two important jobs at once. It creates a barrier to help stop weeds, and it also feeds the lawn with slow-release fertilizer to support steady growth and color.

Step 2: Second Spring Application

Apply Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer again 6 to 8 weeks later

(For more northern climates, only one application of pre-emergent is needed)

A second application of Guardian helps extend weed barrier coverage into summer. This is especially important if you want season-long crabgrass prevention while continuing to feed the lawn.

For homeowners who want a lawn that stays thick, healthy, and clean through spring and early summer, this second application is a key part of the program.

Step 3: Summer Application

Apply Emerald 10-0-20 Fertilizer

After the two spring pre-emergent applications, cool-season lawns should move into Emerald 10-0-20 for the summer months. Apply 2x 6-8 weeks apart.

Emerald is a great fit for cool-season grass because it contains:

Summer can be tough on cool-season lawns, especially in areas with heat and humidity. Emerald helps support the lawn without pushing too much top growth during stressful weather.

Step 4: Fall Overseeding Application

Apply Starter 15-20-10 when overseeding

Fall is the ideal time to repair and improve cool-season lawns. If you are overseeding, this is when you should apply Starter 15-20-10 along with Envy or North Star Grass Seed.

Starter fertilizer helps new seedlings establish by supplying the nutrients young grass needs for early root development and vigorous growth.

If your lawn is thin, patchy, or worn out from summer stress, this is one of the most important applications of the year.

Step 5: Late Fall Application

Apply Almighty 20-0-10

As the season moves further into fall, cool-season lawns benefit from an application of Almighty 20-0-10.

This fertilizer helps fuel recovery, improve color, and support continued growth during one of the strongest growing periods for cool-season grass. It is a great way to finish the season strong and head into winter with a healthier lawn.

Warm-Season Lawn Fertilizer Schedule

Warm-season lawns follow a similar structure in spring, but the products change slightly because these lawns are often still dormant early in the season.

Step 1: Early Spring Application

Apply Safeguard 0-0-7 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer

For many warm-season lawns, the first spring application should be Safeguard 0-0-7 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer. Applied Mid January or Early February.

This application is made early in spring, before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees, just like cool-season lawns. The difference is that warm-season grasses are often still dormant at this time, so we prefer Safeguard 0-0-7 early on.

This gives you pre-emergent weed control without pushing unnecessary growth while the lawn is still waking up.

Step 2: Second Spring Application

Apply Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer 6 to 8 weeks later

The second application for warm-season lawns is Guardian 13-0-10 Pre-Emergent Fertilizer.

This helps continue weed prevention while also introducing slow-release nutrition as the lawn begins actively growing. It is a strong follow-up application that helps extend control and support spring green-up.

Step 3: Summer Application

Apply Almighty 20-0-10

Once the pre-emergent applications are complete, warm-season lawns should move into Almighty 20-0-10 every 6-8 weeks.

This is the time to push growth, encourage spreading, and build a dark rich green lawn. Almighty is a strong summer fertilizer choice because it helps warm-season grasses perform during their peak growing season.

It also contains micronutrients and iron for improved color, making it a great option for homeowners who want a more aggressive, professional-looking result.

Centipede lawns do not need much nitrogen fertilizer.  For Centipede lawns, apply Nutrigreen 0-0-4.

Step 4: Fall Pre-Emergent Application

Apply Guardian 13-0-10 to prevent poa annua and fall weeds

As summer ends and fall begins, warm-season lawns should receive Guardian 13-0-10 again.

This application helps prevent poa annua and other fall weeds from germinating while also feeding the lawn. Fall pre-emergent is one of the most overlooked applications by homeowners, but it is extremely important for keeping warm-season lawns cleaner through winter and into spring.

Step 5: Late Fall Application

Apply Emerald 10-0-20

As warm-season lawns begin slowing down later in the fall, Emerald 10-0-20 is an excellent choice.

Its slow-release nitrogen, potassium, micronutrients, and iron help support the lawn as growth slows while maintaining color and overall health.

How Far Apart Should Lawn Fertilizer Applications Be?

For both cool-season and warm-season lawns, we recommend spacing applications 6 to 8 weeks apart.

This keeps the lawn consistently fed without large gaps in coverage. A regular schedule also makes weed prevention more effective and helps the lawn perform better through seasonal changes.

How Much Fertilizer Should You Apply?

At Lawn Synergy, we recommend applying fertilizer at 5 pounds per 1,000 square feet for best results.

We do not believe in skimping when it comes to building a high-end lawn. A professional-grade fertilizer program needs enough product to deliver real results, and proper application rates matter.
