The Flower Fields consist of nearly fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers that bloom for about eight to ten weeks each year, from early March to early May, bringing the famous fields back to life. This annual display of flowers – which has become a part of the region's local heritage – is also one of nature's official ways of announcing the arrival of spring in Southern California.

Carlsbad’s Wonderland of Ranunculus Flowers

The real showstopper here? The endless rows of Ranunculus that stretch as far as the eye can see. From punchy colors to softer tones, they've been known to steal the spotlight already 60 years in a row. But they’re not alone – roses, petunias, and lilies also make an appearance, bringing even more character to the landscape. If you’re in California this season, this is one spot you won’t want to miss.

Carlsbad Flower Fields - A Look Back

The fields are the result of nearly eighty-five years of floral cultivation, which began with Luther Gage, an early settler and horticulturist who arrived in the area in the early 1920s. Mr. Gage introduced Ranunculus seeds to the area and started growing them in his fields near Frank Frazee's small vegetable farm in South Oceanside. Frank Frazee began growing ranunculus in 1933 and taught his son Edwin how to seed, cultivate, and irrigate the beautiful but underappreciated flower. At the age of 16, Edwin Frazee dropped out of high school to work full-time in his father's thriving flower business.

Ranunculus is a buttercup-like plant that is native to Asia Minor. Originally, the flowers were single-petal flowers and came in a variety of red and yellow shades. Edwin Frazee's years of careful selection have resulted in the beautiful colors and fullness of the flowers you see today. If nature provided a full flower or an unusual color, Mr. Frazee would save the seed to plant the following year. This resulted in full flowers in thirteen beautiful colors, including a variegated color mixture.

In 2004, Edwin Frazee passed away, leaving his goal of bringing people closer to agriculture, and his wish for Ranunculus to live on after his passing was completed and fully met. His presence is felt each spring as the Ranunculus fully flourishes. The Flower Fields, which began in Luther Gage's flower beds and has since become one of San Diego County's most recognizable events and landmarks, continues to show nature at its finest while also symbolizing the diligence of two of the region's most important and colorful pioneers.
