The new season has begun, and at Pico Bello Hortensia, the first weeks are already in full swing. I spoke with Danny Kouwenhoven, one of the driving forces behind the family business, about new varieties, smart decisions, and the power of collaboration.
Full Throttle Innovation at Pico Bello Hortensia
“We’ve been busy during the winter replacing plants“, Danny affirms enthusiastically, “This year, we have many new varieties, especially new plants. We’ve invested heavily in this. While the greenhouse is bursting with blooms, the work behind the scenes is also focused on the future; meanwhile, three babies were born. Generation three is on its way!”

Production is now operating at full speed: “We started in the second week of April and are now running at maximum capacity. We’re trimming large quantities every day.” The pressure is high, as Mother’s Day—a key moment in the season—is approaching. “For Mother’s Day, we want to have as many flowers cut as possible. It falls on May 10 this year, so this week, we need to do some serious trimming.”

New Varieties, New Opportunities
Pico Bello Hortensia is committed to innovation with several new varieties. Danny mentions, among others, Hydrangea Royal Highness, a double white flower that can also be used as double green. “We want to grow it for both purposes: a latte white and a classic green.” Additionally, there’s Hydrangea Samurai, a variety developed in-house. “We initially had a small test bed for it, but we’ve expanded that area. It’s truly a striking yellowish-purple, two-tone leaves, and very unique.”

Smaller expansions also contribute to renewal. For example, the Hydrangea Amber variety has been added, and sections with Hydrangea Verena have been renewed. “We always try to keep a touch of freshness in our assortment.”

A Family Business With Vision
Pico Bello Hortensia is a true family business. Danny runs it together with his two brothers, Bob and Richard, and their father remains closely involved. “The three of us make the plans, but we review everything carefully with our father. It’s a joint effort.” This structure ensures continuity, short lines of communication, and strong decision-making.
Leading in Diversity and Quality
With about 35 varieties across 10 hectares, and each variety available in multiple colors, the diversity is substantial. “If you cultivate all those varieties in four different colors, you quickly reach 140 to 150 variations. It’s complex but also incredibly challenging. That’s how we can always supply the market with the right colors at the right moments in the season,” affirms Danny.
The goal is clear: to be a leader in innovation, diversity, and top quality. And if Danny makes sure these standards are met every day. “The flowers look great, the quality is high, and we’re extremely excited. We’re fully prepared for what’s next.”

Onward to a Flourishing New Season!
