Hi, my name is Valentin. And, how appropriate, today I will create a Valentin(e) arrangements for you, explaining step by step how I went about it.

Valentine’s Day arrangements don’t have to be overly complicated to make an impact. Sometimes, it’s all about strong lines, thoughtful color choices, and a clear design concept. Let's take a look at the steps in the making of this romantic arrangement, created in collaboration with Sideau® by Agra-Wool International.

My Valentine's Day Arrangement Step 1 – Choosing the Base

Every design starts with the right foundation. Valentin begins with a sleek black Japanese-style bowl, instantly setting a modern tone. The vessel is filled with Sideau® Cake Dummy, creating a solid base for the flowers and allowing full freedom in placement and structure.

The dark bowl adds contrast later, making colorful arrangements stand out even more.

Step 2 – A Soft Layer of Green

Next comes moss.

The entire surface is lightly covered, not packed down, to allow airflow. Because this arrangement focuses on a linear design rather than a flat grouping, it’s important that the bases are not visible. The moss also adds a fresh green accent – decorative, natural, and calming against the intense Valentine palette.

It’s a small step that makes a big visual difference.

Step 3 – Setting the Lines With Key Flowers

Now the structure begins.

We start with roses and gerberas in warm reds and pinks – classic Valentine colors that represent emotion. Each stem is cut cleanly at an angle and inserted firmly into the foam, all placed in straight lines.

This is where the concept takes shape.

We carefully align the flowers to create a strong line that guides the eye through the arrangement. It’s precise, intentional, and surprisingly powerful.

Step 4 – Building the Composition

Using the same technique, we continue adding the remaining flowers, always respecting the linear rhythm established at the start.

Rather than filling randomly, each stem supports the overall flow. The result is a cohesive design where every flower has its place, contributing to both movement and balance.

This step is about patience – letting the form develop naturally while staying true to the original vision.

Step 5 – A Pop of Love

What is Valentine’s Day without hearts? To complete the arrangement, I add heart picks to the sticks and spray them red to match the color scheme. See how they blend into the composition while still offering a playful pop of color. It’s a bold yet charming detail that reinforces the theme without overpowering the flowers.

Step 6 – The Final Result

The finished piece is a modern Valentine arrangement with warm hues, graphic lines, and heartfelt accents. The combination of structured florals, soft moss, and bold hearts creates a design that feels contemporary yet emotional - perfect for Valentine’s Day displays or statement centerpieces.

FAQ

How fast does Sideau® absorb water?

A standard Sideau® block can absorb approximately 1.5 liters of water in just 1 second. It’s important not to submerge it longer than that, as over-soaking can cause surface softening. Correct hydration ensures optimal stem support and consistent performance.

What is the consists of Sideau® Cake Dummy?

It consists of 97% basalt, a natural volcanic stone, bonded with a plant-based binder derived from sucrose (natural sugar). This means Sideau® is entirely natural and can be composted after use. The minerals in basalt enrich the soil, promoting healthy plant growth. Additionally, Sideau® is pH-neutral and free from harmful chemicals, making it suitable for use in natural cemeteries and recognized as a sustainable solution in many countries.

I would describe my style as grand and sweeping. I'm not much into minimalistic design, because I am more fond of extravagance, with all the trimmings, showing a lot of color.

My works need to be eye-catchers. My designs show a diverse mix. I like to combine all kinds of flowers, varying from everyday to really special flowers, and from cheap to very expensive flowers; one flower lifts up the other one. I am not focused on trends. I create what I think is beautiful, and I just hope others will understand this and like it.
