In the rolling hills of the Algarve, Koppe Begonia continues to build on a story that blends innovation with nature. Known for its high-quality begonias and forward-thinking propagation methods, the company has further expanded its presence in Portugal – refining not just its production, but the way it connects climate, technology, and people.

A Strategic Leap in Sustainable Production

What started in 2012 in Odeceixe has grown into a carefully orchestrated operation along Portugal’s rugged west coast, just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. Here, space, light, and ocean influence create the ideal environment for cultivation. It’s a place where Dutch growing expertise meets local conditions, resulting in a production process that feels both precise and natural.

A Thoughtful Choice for Long-Term Growth

The decision to produce in Portugal was never accidental. Favorable growing conditions, combined with logistical accessibility and operational stability, made it the right fit. The relatively short distance to the Netherlands allows for close involvement – regular visits, daily coordination, and continuous alignment between teams.

This connection ensures that while production happens locally, the standards and vision remain consistent across all locations. It’s a balance between independence and integration that strengthens the entire operation.

Expanding Capacity With Precision

In 2025, Koppe Begonia marked an important milestone with the expansion of its Portuguese site. A new greenhouse department was added, increasing production capacity and further optimizing workflows. The facility, built by BosmanVanZaal, features a modern Venlo structure with advanced mobile benching systems designed to maximize efficiency.

Climate control plays a central role. With screening systems from Peter Dekker Installations and climate regulation managed by the Hoogendoorn IIVO system, conditions are continuously monitored and adjusted. This allows the team to create a stable environment for propagation, regardless of external influences.

At the same time, Koppe Begonia continues to invest in biological crop protection, supported by ongoing monitoring. Insect netting and natural barriers reduce dependency on chemical interventions, aligning with the company’s broader sustainability goals.

Powered by People

Behind every technical system is a team that keeps everything running smoothly. In Portugal, a permanent group of 12 experienced employees forms the backbone of daily operations. Many have been involved since the early years, bringing continuity and experience to the process.

During peak seasons, the team is supported by returning seasonal workers – many of whom come back year after year. This consistency creates a strong foundation on the shop floor, where efficiency and teamwork go hand in hand.

Innovation With a Sustainable Focus

One of the standout features of the new greenhouse is the complete transition to LED lighting. Supplied by DLI, this shift reduces energy consumption by up to 50% while supporting the healthy development of mother plants. It’s a step that reflects Koppe’s commitment to combining innovation with responsibility.

Sustainability extends beyond energy use. Operating under MPS-GAP certification, the greenhouse emphasizes responsible water management, using rainwater and local canal sources, and adhering to strict hygiene standards.

Growing With Purpose

What makes their Portuguese location truly special is the combination of elements: the climate, the technology, and the people behind it. Each plays a role in achieving the same goal every day – delivering consistent, reliable quality to customers around the world.

Growth is not just about scale, but about precision, partnership, and long-term thinking. In Portugal, those values have found the perfect place to take root.
