In the rolling hills of the Algarve, Koppe Begonia opens a new greenhouse in Portugal once again. The company, renowned for its exquisite begonias and pioneering propagation techniques, is taking a bold step in its ongoing journey of growth and environmental innovation.

A Strategic Leap in Sustainable Production

Since its establishment in 2012 in Odeceixe, Portugal, Koppe Begonia has harnessed the region’s favorable climate - ample sunlight, mild temperatures, and proximity to the Atlantic - to produce high-quality pot plant growers around the globe. Building on this foundation, 2025 marked a significant milestone: the opening of a cutting-edge greenhouse designed to boost production capacity.

This expansion allows Koppe to increase its Begonia cutting production while relocating part of its activities from the Netherlands to Portugal. The strategic decision was driven by multiple advantages: a motivated local workforce, reliable transportation routes - including truck deliveries to the Netherlands and air freight to North America via Frankfurt - and a notably lower insect pressure, reducing the need for chemical interventions.

In total, Koppe employs a diverse team, with over 40 members during the season, including 12 permanent employees who have been with the company since its inception in Portugal. The seasonal workforce is an international team that assists in raspberry farming during the summer.

Innovative Design and Cutting-Edge Technology

Constructed by BosmanVanZaal, the new greenhouse features a spacious 12.8-meter-wide Venlo structure, fitted with a sophisticated mobile benching system that maximizes space efficiency. The greenhouse’s design integrates advanced climate management solutions, such as screening installations by Peter Dekker Installations, combining external roll screens with internal shading options. This system allows precise control over solar radiation, essential for maintaining optimal growth conditions.

Insect netting installed in vents acts as a natural barrier against pests, further supporting the company’s commitment to biological crop protection. Climate regulation is managed by the Hoogendoorn IIVO computer system — an integrated platform used across all Koppe locations — facilitating seamless data sharing and operational consistency.

A Bright Future With LED Technology

One of the most groundbreaking features of the new greenhouse is its complete switch to LED lighting, supplied by DLI. This not only reduces electricity consumption by up to 50% but also signifies a shift towards more sustainable cultivation practices. For the first time, mother plants are cultivated entirely under LED lighting, based on promising trial results indicating successful adaptation.

The use of LED technology exemplifies Koppe’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint while maintaining high standards of quality. Grower Avner Musli oversees the cultivation of mother plants, implementing preventive and biological crop protection strategies to ensure healthy growth.

Sustainable and Traceable Operations

Koppe’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond energy efficiency. The new greenhouse operates under strict MPS-GAP certification standards, ensuring responsible water use — primarily sourced from rainfall and local canals — and meticulous documentation of inputs and hygiene practices. This transparency supports the company’s goal of producing the highest quality begonias in an environmentally conscious manner.
