Every year on the 16th of April, orchid fanatics and enthusiasts come together to appreciate the beauty and diversity of one of nature's most divine creations: the orchid. National Orchid Day is a day dedicated to celebrating these fascinating flowering plants which are renowned for their fab colors, on-fleek shapes, and scents.

Let's go through the history of National Orchid Day, the importance of these flowers, and why people across the globe adore them so much. And, as a bonus, pick up some inspiration from world-class top designers along the way.

A Brief History of National Orchid Day

Orchids – belonging to the family Orchidaceae – are a widespread family of flowering plants, with colorful and fragrant blooms. National Orchid Day was created in 2015 by a South Carolina couple, Mike and Faith Young, in remembrance of their daughter who passed away the previous year.

The couple fell in love with orchids while volunteering at an orchid reserve in Mexico, and they decided that if they ever had a daughter, they would name her 'Orchid'. They had a daughter, but she died while in labor. Following the loss of their daughter, the couple wanted to honor the day and celebrate her memory with their favorite flower. So they decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds needed to register for this special day. They offered pre-orders for their backyard honey, The Humble Bumbles Honey, and within hours of starting, had raised the required $1,500 and registered 'National Orchid Day'.

Since then, the day has become widely recognized by orchid growers, enthusiasts, and botanical gardens. With so many varieties to choose from, anyone can enjoy the beauty of orchids from home or by visiting botanical gardens around the world.

Mike and Faith plan to spend the rest of their lives caring for and raising awareness about orchids. They believe that by establishing a National Orchid Day to honor the beautiful lives lost, people all over the world will appreciate orchids even more, and their little girl will feel the warmth of those who remember orchids on that day.

In the case of orchids, these charming flowers hold significant importance in the world for several reasons:

A Diverse Family of Plants

There are over 25,000 species of orchids and more than 100,000 hybrids, making them one of the largest and most diverse families of flowering plants. Conservation Efforts

Unfortunately, many orchid species are at risk due to habitat loss, climate change, and over-collection. National Orchid Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of conserving these unique plants and their habitats. By supporting conservation initiatives, as a community we can all help protect orchids for future generations to enjoy.

Cultural Significance

Orchids hold cultural significance in many parts of the world. In traditional Chinese medicine, orchids have been used for centuries for their supposed healing properties. They are also revered in many Asian cultures as symbols of love, beauty, and strength. In Western culture, orchids have long been associated with elegance and luxury.

Symbolism of the Mighty Orchid

Orchids carry meaning and symbolism. Their appearance makes them one of the most desirable plants to gift.

The orchid symbolizes love, luxury, beauty, and strength, making it the most sought-after ornamental plant. In ancient Greece, orchids were associated with virility. Greek women believed that feeding their unborn child large, new orchid tubers would result in a boy. If the mother consumed small orchid tubers, she would give birth to a girl.

The orchid symbolizes love, beauty, refinement, fertility, thoughtfulness, and maturity. Orchids have become a major global market. Buyers are now bidding hundreds of dollars for new or improved hybrids, making orchids one of the most popular cut flowers on the market.
