Campanula breeding is evolving, and one of the names at the forefront is Stadsland Breeding. During a recent visit to their facilities in Angeren, the passion for quality and innovation was unmistakable. Fiona Koning Noordam, a specialist in breeding unique Campanula and Celosia varieties, offered a behind-the-scenes look into how this breeder refines plant vitality and floral character to shape the next generation of floral excellence.

Prolific Stems and Desired Traits Are Key Focus Areas

Though the Campanula season is only just beginning, the trial cabinets are already in full bloom. Fiona explains that vitality is increasing, while key traits such as double flowers and green striping are developing strongly. Yet, achieving uniformity and stability in these traits remains an ongoing challenge.

One of the central breeding targets is stem architecture. At Stadsland Breeding, the goal is to develop plants with a minimum of five harvestable stems, with some trial varieties reaching ten. The newly introduced ‘Evergreen White’ demonstrates what the team can do: a strong double-flowered Campanula that transitions from green to white as it matures, adding visual interest throughout its vase life.

Collaborating with Growers to Refine Results

Fiona emphasizes the importance of grower feedback in refining their breeding programs. “We actively seek contact, visit locations, and exchange images,” she says. “This helps us align our selections with real-world cultivation and market demands.” While these Campanulas are currently intended for biennial cultivation, trials are ongoing to explore annual growth potential as well.

Stadsland Breeding’s approach is highly collaborative, bridging the gap between research and practical application. With international trials now taking place, including in North America, the breeder is increasingly drawing global attention.

Campanula Evergreen White Signals a New Era

The introduction of Evergreen White is more than a new variety; it's a signal of where Campanula breeding is headed. Its robust structure, double blooms, and rare green-to-white gradient mark it as a standout product. This variety reflects the broader mission of Stadsland Breeding—to merge reliability with distinct beauty, all while pushing genetic boundaries.

The emphasis on form, productivity, and color nuance is creating Campanulas that are more than decorative—they are purposeful, grower-friendly, and florist-ready. With trial varieties like these, the future of Campanula looks more refined and versatile than ever.

Celosia to Shine Again Later This Year

While Campanula is the current star, Stadsland Breeding is also well-known for its work with Celosia. “It’s a stubborn flower,” Fiona remarks with a smile, “but one I’ve come to love deeply.” Celosia has its own character and breeding requirements, and Fiona hints at exciting developments to come. Stay tuned for more as this vibrant bloom reclaims the spotlight in the months ahead.
