John Lim is the founder of This Humid House, a botanical design studio founded in Singapore that is committed to developing a language expressed through plants and flowers. The studio has made a name for itself with designs created for luxury brands such as Kenzo, Cartier, Franck Muller, and many others. This week, he is part of the florist special.

John Lim - The Creator of This Humid House

This Humid House was founded in 2017 and is comprised of a team of designers with offices in Singapore and Paris. John and his team's intention is to develop a language expressed through plants and flowers that is reflective of their company's climate, geography, and collective culture.

John's unexpected career change was influenced by his reflections on Singaporean culture and the role of plants, having trained as an architect and botanical designer. The studio's unconventional work has disrupted the floristry industry in Singapore.

As a botanical design studio, This Humid House focuses on the contemporary, constantly exploring how to assemble living materials in a way that feels fresh and relevant today. At the same time, the studio balances principles, refining shape, volume, color, line, and texture to create an emotional connection. This thoughtful approach is consistently applied across all scales of work, from a boutonnière to the design of an entire park.

He says:

"I’m concerned about the lines, form, and shape. We go about (floral arrangements) in a very intentional way and treat it as though it is a sculpture. Our approach is raw, visceral, and stylistic.”

He also has a penchant for incorporating tropical or unusual plants – or parts of plants – into his work, even to the point of foraging for them. For instance, an iconic piece included a bunch of coconuts placed together within an artistically arranged heap of palm fronds.

John also shares about his design style:

"We are obsessed with things that look weird."
