The Dutch Lily Days were in full bloom, and there’s no better way to experience them than alongside someone who lives and breathes lilies. At De Jong Lilies in Andijk, the opening of this week-long celebration sets the tone: color, fragrance, and future-forward floral breeding. It's here that Jaap Moerman, owner of Moerman Lilium, a large Dutch Lily grower, shares what drives him to attend this annual highlight of the lily world.
A Must-Attend Event for Anyone in the Industry
“These are the moments you just have to be part of,” Jaap says without hesitation. “There’s always something valuable to see here.” The Dutch Lily Days serve as a key meeting ground for growers, breeders, forcing specialists, and traders. It’s where inspiration flows freely and connections are built over shared admiration for the lily.

Across the Netherlands, companies with any link to lilies throw open the doors to their show greenhouses. New varieties, breeding advancements, and fresh ideas are displayed with pride. “It’s all there for the taking — knowledge, inspiration, and the unexpected,” Jaap adds. “And it’s always lively.”
Observation, Orientation, and Selection
While Jaap stays closely involved in his profession year-round, the Dutch Lily Days give him a broader view. “You see how varieties you’re already testing perform elsewhere. Some are cold-grown, and that changes everything,” he explains. “At the breeders, you get a glimpse of the lily’s future.”
Even after years in the business, Jaap continues to be amazed. “The progress in the last ten years is incredible. Some say it's the salvation of the lily. That may be a stretch, but it’s certainly a huge boost. A product needs to keep evolving, and lilies are evolving fast.”
Double Lilies Gaining Ground
As both an expert and an enthusiast, Jaap sees strong momentum in double-flowered lilies. Could their rise resemble what happened with double-flowered Lisianthus? “I think most of the market is heading that way. In the beginning, not all varieties were strong, but they’ve improved a lot. Consumers love their bold look — and they’re pollen-free.”
He points out that OT-hybrids with double blooms are also emerging. “Give it five to ten years, and we’ll see an entirely new generation of lilies entering the market. The innovation doesn’t stop.”
Love for Lilies and Its Rebellious Spirit
Jaap also gives a nod to Love for Lilies, the promotional collective of Dutch lily forcers. “I’m not on the board, but I love what they’re doing. Their approach is playful, bold, and effective. You’ll find them at trade shows, on social media, and everywhere the lily deserves to shine.”
Where to Go During Dutch Lily Days
Asked for tips on which locations to visit, Jaap’s answer depends on your role. “If you’re a forcer, start with the big trading houses. For a glimpse into the future, make sure to visit the breeders who’ve opened their greenhouses. Those visits are essential. Everything is in full bloom — it’s beautiful.”

The Lasting Power of the Lily
When asked what makes the lily truly special, Jaap doesn’t hesitate: “You need to show it fully open. The magic of the lily happens in the vase. With four or five buds, you get something new every day for two weeks. That’s just fantastic.”
