Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Eric Stockman of Rosefruits.nl in Serbia. Over two inspiring days, we traveled across his farms, discussed the cultivation and development of rosehips, and I had the chance to experience the land, its culture, and, of course, the stunning rosehip branches. Rosefruits.nl exemplifies how Coloríginz collaborates with innovative and sustainable growers to push the boundaries of floral and botanical to a high end.
From Cut Roses to Rosehips: A Family Tradition Meets Innovation
Eric comes from a family with a rich history in the rose industry. His grandfather cultivated the renowned Rose Baccara, while his father improved varieties and worked internationally. Eventually, the family business expanded into Africa, and later, the Dutch company was phased out and sold. Seeking a new challenge, Eric wanted to apply his experience and pioneering spirit to a fresh venture.

“Back then, rosehips were still an underdeveloped product. I saw opportunities to utilize my expertise,” Eric shares.
Through contacts with Peter van der Pol, Eric was introduced to wild rose species suitable for production. In 2005, he embarked on his journey in Serbia - a country with reduced production costs, favorable climate conditions, and minimal disease pressure.

“We started with two varieties: Sensational Fantasy and Sunset Hip Hop. We carefully examined each branch, analyzing its potential for growth and development. Only later did we focus on breeding and developing new, nearly thornless varieties.”

Innovation Meets Market Needs
Rosefruits.nl’s success is rooted in cultivation, driven by a keen market-oriented approach. Eric listens closely to the needs of florists and the broader market. This has led to the development of longer stems, ranging from 60 centimeters to a meter, as well as small, delicate ones that are highly valued.

“The small rosehips are not only beautiful - they’re easier to grow and store, making them more practical for florists,” Eric explains.
Sustainable Cultivation in Harmony With Nature
Sustainability is at the core of Rosefruits.nl’s philosophy. Eric employs mechanical weed control, uses compost to maintain healthy soil, and creates wide strips with pasture paths to support bees and beneficial insects.

“We give space to nature - above and below ground. This results in healthier plants, less water and fertilizer use, and ultimately, a product with a genuine ‘shine,’” Eric emphasizes.
He also shares practical tips with florists, such as proper storage and processing methods for rosehips, recognizing that these are not ordinary flowers but fruit. Proper handling extends their shelf life and preserves their quality.
Collaboration With Coloríginz
The feedback from florists is invaluable for Eric, helping him refine new varieties and products. For Coloríginz, Rosefruits.nl is an inspiring partner - delivering high-quality products, exploring new possibilities, and contributing to sustainable development.

“Rosefruits.nl demonstrates how innovation, knowledge, and market awareness come together in a bold, sustainable enterprise,” says a representative from Coloríginz.
Looking Ahead
Personally, it was inspiring to see how a grower with a background in cut roses translates that experience into a completely new product segment. Rosefruits.nl bridges tradition, innovation, and respect for nature - making it a partner we’re proud to work with!
