Rachel Wayne on BLXXM, Floral Expression, and NYC’s Design Scene
Over the years, Rachel has developed a signature style that challenges tradition while clasping the natural movement of each stem. Featured in this floral design special, she shares more of her story, influences, some of her favorite flowers, and the creative process behind her company's standout designs.
Her history in the industry has been a sequence of related events. Her desire to be a part of Nashville, Tennessee's creative community began nine years ago when she naively offered to help a musician she was seeing at the time who needed flowers for a low-budget music video. Musicians, photographers, and other creatives all sought out flowers as it spread like wildfire. Rachel became caught in the possibilities and inventiveness of it all. In order to pursue a career in the flower industry, she eventually abandoned the stability of full-time work and relocated to New York City.
It was at this point that she established BLXXM in 2021 and immediately gained recognition for her collaborative spirit and artistic style. The colors and textures of diverse settings serve as inspiration for Rachel's artwork, which is greatly impacted by her travels. When seeing her creations, her audience is enthralled with her creative ideas and the distinct feel and finesse she adds to each project.
Sharing Some of Her Favorite Flowers
Beyond their appearance, Rachel is drawn to the subtlety that gives each flower a special attractiveness. She is drawn to tulips in the spring, observing how they never stop growing despite being pruned, and constantly seeking the light. She sees it as a subdued yet potent reminder that no matter how much the surroundings change, growth never truly ceases.
Snapdragons have an even more personal meaning because they are her mother's favorite flower, and they both have the capacity to keep growing upward. The flower felt even more special after learning of this connection, which was like an unspoken bond between them. And when summer approaches, Rachel's devotion is to smoke bush, a plant that she loves year after year, nonstop.
A Pro When It Comes to Tablescaping With Flowers and Natural Elements
Rachel Wayne approaches tablescaping with an effortless, tactile sensibility, curating settings that feel personal, lived-in, and deeply connected to memory. She gravitates toward textured elements—pieces that look as though they’ve been shaped by nature itself, like weathered sea glass, salt-worn ceramics, and linens that carry the softness of time. Vintage glassware and found objects add layers of character, turning each table into a masterpiece.
Her time spent on the French coast left an undeniable imprint on her aesthetic—long, unhurried afternoons filled with fresh fruit, olives, warm bread, butter, and wine, shared among close friends. It’s this feeling of simple abundance, the kind that nourishes both body and spirit, that she translates into every tablescape with the use of natural elements and flowers, ensuring that each gathering feels intimate and full.
She shares:
"As a floral designer, my work ebbs and flows with the seasons, leaving me with downtime during winter and summer. When I travel, I'm constantly taking mental pictures of the color palettes and textures within the landscape. Remembering how they feel and drawing to that same feeling when creating in any medium."
