Excited to welcome Imani Flowers to Thursd's community. As a grower of cut summer flowers, Imani Flowers has defined consistency and quality as a possibility when you strive towards it over the years. A decade of excellence, consistent growth, and improvement, is a story of the grower's resilience.
Recognizing the need to change strategy timely to adapt to ever-changing market demands, while staying on top of operational challenges. Imani Flowers's story shows their passion for delivering high-quality Kenyan summers to your doorstep. Here is a story of flowers grown with you in mind, a story of Imani Flowers.
Imani Flowers - The Inception
Started in 2012 at Naivasha as their first location, Imani Flowers had a vision, to revolutionize the summer floral sector. To grow unique, quality, and niche flowers. Subsequently providing opportunities to the surrounding community and contributing to its development.
Roy Gachoki, the company's Managing Director notes:
"Imani’s first steps were taken in Naivasha, from where Imani began to experience the world. Mistakes were made, and school fees were paid, but we emerged a little successfully with systems and people that could deliver quality stems.
We took all the lessons we learned and moved our operation to Nakuru in 2017, where we have been ever since, growing from stride to stride, from failure to failure… to failure, to success like a plant seeking sustenance and growth for its roots in the dark before a little stalk emerges into the light."
Today, Imani Flowers is a 35-ha farm located on the outskirts of Nakuru City in the Rift Valley region in Kenya. Having moved to this location in 2014, they are now a decade old and counting. With an intent to grow incredible quality consistency, this has proved right with the award of KFC silver certification and continuous supply of A1 quality for the past 4 years to the Royal FloraHolland auction.
Their continuous commitment to supplying exceptional ornamentals creates and sustains value for all stakeholders. Honoring the soil that makes this possible, while creating a healthy working environment for its valued employees.
The A1 Team, You Matter
Imani Flowers attributes its success and sustainable growth to its great team of employees. The grower has benefitted immensely from its workforce by creating an enabling environment. Employees have a sense of autonomy and freedom to do the right thing.
The company's director reiterates that;
"We have provided an environment where they are allowed to make decisions in their department or allocated work (within the boundaries created by management) and make mistakes and an environment that incentivizes solutions rather than only bringing forth problems. We believe everyone has something to offer and should have some determination in the type of work they do, allowing decisions and some level of mistakes to be made creates a sense of ownership over the work one does.
A sense of ownership accountability, and incentive allows one’s work to flourish, one to feel a genuine interest in their work, and to become better."
The first step to growing and supplying quality summer flowers and subsequently taking care of your customers. Taking good care of the people who do it all, the employees. Imani Flowers sees their contributions to their workforce's motivation as a strategy and the one that has catapulted them to grow and position themselves well in the market.
Social and Environmental Sustainability
Taking good care of your employees and enhancing their sustained growth is not enough without respect for the environment. Imani Flowers is a firm believer in giving back to the soil not only taking away from it. Their production of compost rich in plant and organic matter infused with beneficial micro-organisms enriches and renews their soils for continuous sustainable growth. Partial solar-powered irrigation systems combined with annual tree planting within and outside the farm also go a long way.
Socially, the grower has set out to impact its employees and the surrounding community positively. Roy shares:
"We have also initiated several CSR activities, from community health support drives at least once a year – to screening for cervical cancer, breast cancer, HPV, COVID-19, and eye checkups. Offering COVID vaccines(during the Covid period), and HPV vaccines, connecting potential breast or cervical cancer patients to clinics and affordable medication, and sponsoring boxing matches for underprivileged youth. Providing free subscription glasses to those in need."
Imani Flowers employees benefit from the savings and credit cooperative exclusively created for them and the surrounding community. In ways where their income cannot suffice or unforeseen emergencies, they have quick and unconditional access to affordable credit to meet their needs.
