Sustainability in floral design is often measured by what happens during the creation. But increasingly, florists are asking a different question: what happens after the flowers are gone?
At a recent workshop hosted by Florazon, the answer became surprisingly visible. Participants explored not only how Sideau®, developed by Agra-Wool International, supports floral creations, but also what can be done with the material once its primary purpose has been fulfilled. The results offered a powerful reminder that true sustainability is about creating value long after the first use.
Watching New Life Emerge
During the workshop, seeds were germinated directly on Sideau®, demonstrating the material’s ability to support early plant development. Even more impressive was the growth of young plants in leftover pieces of Sideau® that had already been used.
What would normally be considered a residual material became a growing medium.
The experiment highlighted an important aspect of circular thinking: a material does not lose its value simply because its original task is complete. Instead, it can enter a new phase of usefulness, supporting new life and growth.
Completing the Circle
The story of Sideau® begins with basalt, a natural volcanic rock. Through an innovative production process, this raw material is transformed into a versatile floral design medium that helps florists create stable and beautiful arrangements.
But the journey does not end there.
After use, leftover pieces of Sideau® can be incorporated into alternative growing substrates, helping reduce the need for conventional materials. As those organic growing systems continue their cycle, the remaining material can be added to a compost heap, blended with soil, and gradually returned to nature.
It is a simple yet meaningful sequence:
Basalt → Sideau® → substrate alternative → compost → soil enrichment → nature
Each stage enhances the material’s value and minimizes waste, creating a cycle that aligns with the principles many florists and growers strive to embrace.
Small Choices, Lasting Impact
For floral professionals, sustainability is rarely about one big solution. More often, it is the result of countless small decisions that collectively make a difference.
Choosing materials that continue to contribute after their initial use is one such decision. Whether supporting seed germination, serving as a component in growing media, or eventually becoming part of the natural soil cycle, Sideau® demonstrates that a floral base can have a meaningful life beyond the design bench.
Designing With Tomorrow in Mind
As the floral industry continues to evolve, circularity is becoming an increasingly important part of the job. Materials that can transition from design support to plant growth and eventually back into the natural environment help create a more connected and responsible future.
