Introducing Calathea, the Air So Pure plant of the Month for November. A gorgeous plant that not only captivates with its stunning leaf patterns and bright colors but also actively contributes to your well-being. A genuine tropical surprise that brings lively rainforest vibes into your home and workspace.
A Living Artwork With Unique Movements
As you may know, the Calathea is renowned for its various patterned leaves that resemble living works of art. But it’s not only their appearance that makes them special. These plants have a fascinating behavior known as nyctinasty: at night, their leaves gently fold up, and with the first light of dawn, they open again gracefully. This natural movement adds a dynamic, almost magical touch to any room, serving as a delightful reminder of nature’s rhythm.
Versatile Styling for Every Space
Whether you’re decorating a cozy corner or creating a striking centerpiece, the Calathea offers endless styling possibilities. Small varieties can nestle on a bookshelf or in a charming cabinet, while larger specimens make stunning focal points or are perfect in a mix pot for a gorgeous display. Combine different sizes and species to create a green oasis that elevates your interior design while purifying the air simultaneously.

Caring for Your Calathea: Love and Attention
While Calatheas are known to be a bit demanding, with proper care, they reward you with years of beauty and air-purifying benefits. Place your Calathea in indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight that can scorch its delicate leaves. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as this mimics their humid rainforest habitat. Regularly mist the leaves to maintain high humidity, especially during dry winter months. Maintain a stable temperature between 18°C and 24°C. For optimal results, apply fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Pet-Friendly
Good news for pet owners: the Calathea is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and other household pets. Beyond its visual appeal, this plant actively cleans the air by absorbing pollutants such as formaldehyde and benzene, which are commonly found in household products and other sources. Additionally, its high humidity release can improve indoor air quality and comfort, making it a faithful health ally in your home.
Ideas for Store Presentation
There are many different options for showcasing Calathea. Here are some tips:
- Small specimens: set on a shelf, kitchen island, or a decorative stool for a pop of quiet green among other Air So Pure varieties.
- Medium to tall specimens: dramatic floor plants or striking focal points in a mix-pot with other Air So Pure species to maximize scent, color, and air-cleaning vibes.
- Decorative pots and styling: pair with minimalist planters or textured ceramics to accentuate the shine of the leaves and the gleam of the white bracts.
- Retail displays: Highlight November's air-purifying plant of the month with a 'green, clean, calm' vignette, featuring soft lighting, a gentle breeze, and a note about the air benefits.
Air So Pure – It’s All in the Name
Air So Pure is a unique growers’ collective that has turned ordinary houseplants into something extraordinary. It’s essentially a quality brand of air-purifying indoor plants cultivated by a network of passionate people. Founded in 2007, the concept emerged when a handful of Dutch Spathiphyllum growers discovered that their plants could do more than look pretty – they could purify the air.
