Q: For those unfamiliar with you and your work, how would you describe yourself?

Christopher:

"I am a family-oriented person, a proud father of a daughter, and a passionate master florist. I run two shops and a dedicated decoration department where I create and design floral settings for weddings, corporate events, and large garden shows. I consider myself friendly and helpful and have been actively involved in the Florist Association for twenty years. I must admit I’m somewhat of a workaholic, but that’s simply because I deeply love my profession.

I found my way to floristry because I wanted to do something creative in my life. After completing a fantastic apprenticeship, I worked for several years in a company specializing in large-scale decorations. Following my master’s certification, I started my own business and have been self-employed as a florist ever since. My passion lies in designing garden shows and events such as weddings and corporate celebrations.

I have successfully participated in numerous competitions and am a 3-time Florist Champion of the state of Thüringen. In 2022 I was German Florist Champion. Additionally, I have received multiple awards in the field of garden shows. In summary, my passion and dedication have shaped me into the florist I am today."

A Signature Style Characteristic of Mystical and Morbid

Christopher Ernst’s floral designs are a reflection of his distinctive perspective—rooted in the natural world yet infused with a sense of the unexpected. He shares more:

"I would describe my style as mystical, morbid, and influenced by spiritual elements. I love not only showcasing the beauty of flora but am equally fascinated by the beauty of fauna. To me, flora and fauna together form the perfect unity of nature, and they are intrinsically connected. I come from a very rural area, and this greatly influences my work. Again and again, I notice the interplay between flora and fauna, which often inspires my designs. I would even describe this connection to nature as a cultural trait of the German people."

Insights Into Christopher's Creative Process

Christopher opens up about his approach to design, the importance of his work, and his long-standing dream of competing in the World Cup Floral Art. Read on as he shares more about the journey that has brought him to this momentous event.

Q: Can you share how your creative process begins and what drives your designs?

"My creative process usually starts with sketching and careful planning. I tend to feel restless when I’m developing new ideas, so I channel that energy into drawing and jotting down concepts. Inspiration often finds me in the most unexpected places—a piece of music, a shadow on the pavement, or a detail in a painting. I let those moments guide me, and art itself frequently provides fresh impulses that shape my projects."

Q: What do you believe is the larger purpose of floral design, beyond aesthetics?

He shares:

"As designers, we play a role in creating or enhancing emotions. It could be the joy of a wedding or the solemnity of a funeral—our work connects with people on a deeply emotional level. But there’s also a bigger picture. Through our designs, we can highlight the beauty and uniqueness of the natural world. When people appreciate that, it can inspire them to see the value in protecting and preserving it."

Q: Competing in the World Cup Floral Art is a huge milestone. Was this always a goal of yours?

"Absolutely. Ever since I became a florist, I’ve dreamed of participating in the World Cup. It’s the pinnacle of our profession, and the idea of standing among the world’s best designers has always been a driving force for me. When I received the invitation to represent Germany, I didn’t hesitate for a moment. This competition is an incredible platform to showcase creativity and push boundaries, and I’m honored to be part of it."

Preparing for the World Cup Floral Art 2025

About his participation in the World Cup, we asked him a few other questions to which he responded:

Q: What does preparation for an event of this scale look like for you?

"It begins with research and sketching out ideas. I explore themes and materials that resonate with me, drawing from my personal style while staying open to new possibilities. Competitions like these push us to innovate, so I try to approach them with a balance of planning and flexibility. Once I start working on a piece, I become fully connected—it’s like entering a tunnel where nothing else exists but the design in front of me."

Q: Decorum and Marginpar are key sponsors of the World Cup. Do their flowers and plants feature in your designs?

Christopher:

"Absolutely. Both brands are staples in my work. I’ve collaborated with Decorum on numerous occasions—they consistently deliver exceptional quality flowers and plants. I also have a longstanding relationship with Marginpar, whose unique varieties add character to my designs. Their products align perfectly with my vision, whether I’m creating for competitions, events, or photo shoots."

Ernst's Focus During Competitions

Christopher shares more about how he focuses on these types of competitions:

"During competitions, I am completely focused. I find myself in a tunnel where I am entirely in my element and barely aware of what’s happening around me. I strive to prepare thoroughly to be ready for any situation. With my participation in this competition, I want to draw attention to this wonderful profession and show people that the beauty of nature is worth protecting."

"Curiosity is essential in my work. I constantly stay informed – whether through the internet, print media, or by exchanging ideas with colleagues. What excites me most about floristry is its ability to continually reinvent itself, with some trends even becoming significant lifestyle movements. In the coming years, I want to continue inspiring people with floristry and decoration – ideally on an international level. My dream is to share my floral creations with people all over the world."
