De Ruiter East Africa (DREA) has established itself as a strong player in the red rose segment. In Kenya, approximately 600-700 hectares are dedicated to red varieties. In response to increasing demand, De Ruiter introduced a new promising variety in 2024 — Rose Revolution®.
First adopted by Shalimar Fresh and planted by Nini Flowers in February 2025, now also available from Berg Roses Kenya, this variety is already undergoing trials across 24 farms in Kenya. Growers are excited about Revolution®'s bright red color, which is increasingly sought after in the retail segment.
Who Run the World? Girls!
Katya Hutter, a floral designer based in Amsterdam, specialising in creating luxury and artistic floral décors for private clients, weddings and events, and the fashion industry, worked with the amazing bright Revolution® Roses! She shows that red can be feminine and tough at the same time. Just check out this video; you will see that it's the perfect rose to stand out when it needs to. And the best part of it is not only its color, but it opens nicely, has a good vase life, good production, is strong in all markets, and travels well. A Talk With One of the Growers
At De Ruiter East Africa, they are happy with this new red rose. Revolution has great production, a nice bright red, and growers are pleasantly surprised. So, only good news.
Arun Mishra, head of marketing at Shalimar Fresh (East African Growers Ltd), gives his remarks so far on Rose Revolution:
1: What sets the Revolution variety apart in terms of market demand compared to other red roses in your portfolio?
"This has a unique color and shape combo, which is going to attract our market."
2: What has been the feedback so far from key stakeholders (e.g., florists, wholesalers, retailers)?
"It's very positive till now and I hope the same will continue for the future as well, and variety will get success itself as other reds of De Ruiter have."
3: How does Revolution address changing consumer preferences for roses, such as color, sustainability, vase life, or flower size?
"It has a unique color, bright red, which is attracting to the clients along with head size and vase life. You see the beauty of Revolution when you put it in water, and it gives amazing performance."
