The X-Pression® line from De Ruiter Innovations Ecuador has become known for pushing garden-style roses into a more expressive, design-led category. Developed through modern breeding focused on structure, color development, and vase performance, the collection sits between classic cut roses and the more relaxed, 'garden-grown' aesthetic that designers increasingly look for.
X-Pression® Line by De Ruiter – Garden Character Built for Performance
The X-Pression® series was built as a family of varieties with shared traits: layered petal formation, strong stems, and petals that open in a controlled but natural way. This balance is what gives the line its recognizable presence in floral work without making it feel uniform. You may be wondering, though, what makes them extra special? The altitude at which they're grown in Ecuador.
A key part of this collection's identity is the beautiful country where they are grown. Many varieties are cultivated in Ecuador, particularly in high-altitude regions where consistent light levels and cool night temperatures support slow, even flower development.
One of the main production regions is the Andean corridor, where farms operate at elevations that are especially well-suited for premium roses. At these altitudes, stems tend to develop stronger structure and roses specifically form with more defined petal layers, which directly supports the garden-style appearance the X-Pression® line is known for.
Ecuadorian growers have highlighted that varieties like Rose Sunset X-Pression and Candy X-Pression perform well under these conditions, with consistent stem length, strong productivity, and reliable vase life across harvest cycles. This series definitely gives both growers and designers texture, movement, and visual depth. All while staying true to the garden roses' signature charm.
Variety, Color, and Character Within the X-Pression® Family
The X-Pression® collection includes a wide range of rose varieties that differ in color tone, flower size, and petal structure. Some are soft and romantic, leaning into pastel shades and layered blush tones, while others bring stronger saturation and more defined contrast in petal edges.
The hallmarks of most of the X-Pression® are their full double flower; some are quartered, but most have a somewhat informal organization of the central petals. All have guard petals as well as a couple of rounds of outer petals that 'cup' the flower. Most of the roses in this series reflect fully to the corona, revealing an eye in the middle. A few of the varieties are marked by a prominent green center made up of calyceous material, notably Rose Mandarin X-Pression and Rose Melon X-Pression. At the opposite end of the spectrum, varieties such as Rose Cotton X-Pression and Rose Sunset X-Pression barely reflex at all, leaving a fluffy ball shape with no eye.
Performance Designed for Floral Use
Beyond appearance, this line has been developed with practical performance in mind. Vase life, stem strength, and consistency across harvests are central to the breeding approach. Some varieties in the line are noted for strong vase performance and high productivity, with growers reporting stable results across seasons. This makes the roses suitable for commercial production as well as high-end floral design, where reliability is essential.
Stem lengths across the collection typically fall within a flexible range that supports both bouquet work and larger installations. The structure of the stems allows for easy placement in arrangements, while the roses maintain their form as they continue to open.
In floral design, X-Pression® roses are often used for their ability to carry both structure and softness in the same stem. The natural layering of petals allows them to function as focal flowers in compact arrangements, while still blending into larger compositions where texture and flow are needed. Designers frequently use them in wedding work, event installations, and editorial styling because they adapt to different aesthetic directions without losing their identity. Their garden-style character supports more organic compositions, while their breeding consistency ensures they remain workable at scale.
The Baptism of Juicy X-Pression
During a visit to De Ruiter Innovations’ production site in Ecuador, Peter van Delft spent time walking through the X-Pression® trial blocks to evaluate the development of the garden rose series under real growing conditions. The visit was marked by a closer look at how the line performs at farm level, with particular attention to color expression, form, and consistency across varieties. During his visit, one of the varieties within the collection was symbolically 'baptized' and named Juicy X-Pression, reflecting both its lively character and the expressive direction of the series as a whole.
The collection, developed and grown across key rose-producing regions like Ecuador and Colombia, continues to expand with new colors and forms. At its core, the line is built around contrast: structure and softness, control and openness, uniformity and variation. That balance is what has made X-Pression® roses a recognizable presence in modern floral markets and a consistent reference point for garden-style rose design.
