When you step into the lush greenhouses of nursery Bos Bloemen, you enter a world bursting with color, character, and craftsmanship. Here, the cultivation of Celosia takes center stage, a striking flower celebrated across Europe for its velvety texture and intense hues. As an experienced florist or floral enthusiast, you’ll appreciate the artistry behind these eye-catching blooms and the story they tell about Dutch horticultural excellence.

A Season of Brilliance

Bos Bloemen’s Celosia is cultivated from week 13 through week 48, thriving from early spring until late autumn. During the winter months, production comes to a pause, but as the days grow longer and sunnier, the greenhouse bursts back into life. The carefully curated assortment includes two main series: the Act series and the Reprise series, both developed by renowned breeder Evantia. The young plants are nurtured by Florensis, ensuring consistent quality from the start.

The Act series shines during the peak season, offering robust flowers in five vibrant colors that add strength and presence to any floral arrangement. In contrast, the Reprise series is ideal for use in early and late seasons when light levels are low. These varieties tend to be more delicate, with lighter colors and finer blooms, making them perfect for transitional bouquets.

Color, Character, and Market Appeal

Celosia’s bold personality makes it a natural choice for colorful bouquets that require the spotlight. Philip Bos highlights its unique sparkle: “The power of Celosia is that it glistens in sunlight. Just one stem can completely change the look of a bouquet.”

Popular colors include pink, orange, red, and green hues that evoke warmth and vitality. While a soft pink variant also exists, its limited demand means it’s primarily produced for specific growers. “Celosia is traded more by color than by variety,” Philip adds. An exciting future development? A purple variant that would complement the existing series. “Evanthia, if you’re listening, a purple or green Reprise would be a fantastic addition,” said Philip with a big smile.

Bos Bloemen’s flowers primarily reach florists in Germany, Belgium, and France, with some supplies to garden centers and retail outlets. However, the focus remains on serving the professional floral trade that appreciates the exclusive, premium character of Celosia.

Innovations on the Horizon

This year, the Reprise series has been expanded with the addition of ‘Gold,’ a new, shimmering hue that aims to complete the palette. Additionally, approximately 35% of the production is offered as mixed bouquets featuring lighter, more delicate blooms — a testament to the versatility of this stunning flower.

Quality You Can Trust

A significant portion of Bos Bloemen’s Celosia is marketed under the Decorum label, a mark of top-tier quality. Philip Bos explains: “The first harvest is packed under Decorum, ensuring the highest standards of length, sturdiness, and uniformity. Subsequent harvests are also beautiful, just not the highest quality as Decorum.” With about 50-65% of the flowers meeting these strict criteria, customers can rely on consistent excellence every season.

A Flower With a Bright Future

With a diverse and carefully curated assortment, an eye for vibrant color, and a commitment to quality, Philip Bos ensures his Celosia remains a favorite among floral professionals. These blooms are more than just flowers — they are a statement piece, a symbol of Dutch horticultural mastery, and a true jewel in every bouquet.
