10 Questions to Arthij van der Veer

When you speak with Arthij van der Veer, one thing becomes clear very quickly: sustainability is not simply a professional responsibility for him. It is a mindset that shapes how he approaches business, leadership, and life. After 25 years with MPS, he has witnessed the floral industry evolve across continents, markets, and generations, while remaining committed to helping growers demonstrate the positive impact they create every day.

From living and working in Latin America to supporting growers across Africa, Asia, and the Americas, Arthij has built a career around connecting people, sharing knowledge, and helping the industry move forward. In this edition of 10 Questions, he reflects on mentorship, technology, family, faith, and why he believes the floral industry's greatest strength lies in its ability to adapt, collaborate, and continue growing in a changing world.

Question 1

For those who don’t know you, who are you, and what do you do?

"My name is Arthij van der Veer, and I am an Area Manager within the MPS. The company operates in nearly seventy countries and works with more than 3,200 growers on sustainability, environmental best practices, ethical standards, and carbon footprint management. Within the group, we also have MPS ECAS, one of the largest certification bodies in the Netherlands for fruits and vegetables.

This year marks my 25th year with the company. I started as an auditor and certification manager before moving into international roles. I spent twelve years based in Latin America, helping build and manage our operations across Central and South America while also supporting our expansion into North America. Today, I oversee activities across Africa and the Americas, as well as business development in Asia and Israel. Outside of work, I am married, have three children, enjoy traveling and working out, and feel fortunate to work in an industry where I can continuously learn from growers around the world."

Question 2

What is so special about your job?

"The diversity is what makes it special. No two days are the same. I work with growers across multiple continents, from small family businesses to large-scale operations producing a wide range of products.

What I enjoy most is working with growers on sustainability. We have a responsibility to leave the world in a better condition for the next generation. As a father, that is something I think about often. Sustainability is not only about reducing impact. It is also about helping growers improve their businesses while demonstrating the positive contributions our industry makes to society."

Question 3

Are there any specific challenges or obstacles you’ve faced at work, and how did you overcome them?

"One challenge is helping people understand the value of sustainability and certification. Certification is not always seen as exciting, but once growers understand how it helps them improve their operations and communicate their achievements to customers, they begin to see its value.

The industry also faces broader challenges. Consumer expectations are changing, there is increased scrutiny around environmental practices, and global issues such as transport disruptions and geopolitical tensions affect all of us. For me, overcoming challenges comes down to persistence, collaboration, and continuing to demonstrate the positive work our industry is doing."

Question 4

What are the threats in the industry, and if so, do you have any solutions for them?

"One of the biggest threats is becoming reactive instead of proactive. Consumers want to know where products come from, how they are produced, and what impact they have on people and the environment. Those questions are not unique to floriculture, but we must be prepared to answer them.

The solution lies in collaboration and transparency. Growers, certification bodies, retailers, and sustainability initiatives need to work together to create practical solutions while maintaining credibility. We must also continue communicating the benefits flowers and plants bring to people's lives and ensure the industry remains relevant to future generations."

Question 5

How has technology, such as e-commerce platforms or digital marketing, affected your industry? What strategies have you employed to stay competitive?

"Technology has transformed the way we work. MPS has always been a data-driven organization, and over the years we have seen enormous progress in how information is collected, shared, and used throughout the supply chain.

Digital marketing has also changed how the industry communicates. Platforms like Thursd have expanded our ability to reach global audiences and engage younger generations. Looking ahead, artificial intelligence presents exciting opportunities. Rather than fearing technology, we should embrace it and use it to improve efficiency, communication, and decision-making across the industry."

Question 6

Who (in or outside the floral industry) is an inspiring example to you? And Why?

"My father has been one of the biggest inspirations in my life. He taught me the value of hard work and helped open the door to my first job in the industry.

Professionally, people such as Nico Komen and Ron Leiswijk, the former CEO of MPS ECAS, played important roles in shaping my career. They shared knowledge, guidance, and leadership lessons that continue to influence me today. Beyond that, working internationally has allowed me to learn from countless people across different cultures. Those experiences have shaped who I am and inspire me to pass that knowledge on to others."

Question 7

How do you handle stress or difficult moments in your life?

"Faith plays an important role in my life. My Catholic upbringing continues to provide guidance, strength, and perspective when facing challenges.

I also believe in taking a step back when things become overwhelming. Whether through exercise, self-reflection, or conversations with people I trust, I try to create space to think clearly before moving forward. Challenges are part of life, but how we respond to them is what matters most."

Question 8

What has been the best (floral or non-floral) news for you lately, or of the last year?

"For me, the most positive development is seeing the industry continue to grow and adapt. Despite challenges such as COVID, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical issues, the floral sector has remained resilient.

I am also encouraged by the industry's growing commitment to sustainability. More businesses are embracing transparency, responsibility, and data-driven decision-making. Those developments help strengthen trust across the supply chain and position the industry well for the future."

Question 9

Which is your favorite flower/plant, and why is it good for you?

"If I had to choose one, it would probably be the sunflower. Its bright yellow color reminds me of the sun, which represents warmth, energy, and strength.

At the same time, I appreciate the incredible diversity within our industry. Whether it is roses, lilies, summer flowers, tropical plants, or something entirely new, flowers and plants bring joy into people's lives. For me, any flower or plant that creates a positive environment is special."

Question 10

What are you doing this weekend?

"This weekend is all about family. I will spend time with my parents, visit my son, and then return home to Portugal to be with the rest of my family.

After years of working internationally and traveling extensively, I have come to value family time even more. Being together with loved ones is a blessing, and I am looking forward to enjoying those moments together."

Throughout this conversation, Arthij returns to a simple but powerful idea: progress is achieved through persistence, collaboration, and a willingness to keep learning. Whether discussing sustainability, technology, industry challenges, or personal growth, his perspective is grounded in long-term thinking and a genuine belief that people and businesses can always improve.
