What is the 'Grower for a Day' series?
Following 'A Path to Floral Mastery', Decorum launches a new documentary series: Grower for a Day. In this series, renowned master florists and international experts literally step into the world of Decorum growers.
Joseph Massie, Klaus Wagener, Michael Perry (aka Mr. Plant Geek), and Nadia Duran embarked on a journey to visit all Decorum growers. They lend a hand, ask questions, and experience firsthand the real work behind every plant and flower. From early mornings in the greenhouse to practical tasks and day-to-day decisions, everything is covered.
These encounters are filled with surprising insights, educational conversations, and moments that are sure to make you smile. No frills, no final floral creations, just a strong focus on the craftsmanship, knowledge, and dedication of the grower.
Grower for a Day offers a unique behind-the-scenes perspective and shows what it takes, day to day, to grow top-quality plants and flowers. A series that inspires both enthusiasts and professionals, while sparking curiosity about the world behind every Decorum plant and flower.
Each month, a new episode of Grower for a Day follows a master florist or well-known industry professional as they step into the shoes of a grower. The goal is simple yet powerful: show where the top-quality process begins and why craftsmanship at the grower level makes all the difference further down the chain. February's Spotlight: Michael Perry & The Phalaenopsis Orchids
From the moment young plants arrive at the nursery, quality is checked with precision. Every orchid is assessed, sorted, and guided through a carefully orchestrated growing process. Michael follows each step, from early selection to the creation of Bernhard’s signature cascade, better known as waterfall orchids.
He even steps onto the production line himself, learning how timing, balance, and a steady hand are essential when shaping these flowing designs. It’s meticulous work, where small adjustments make a big difference. The experience highlights just how much expertise is required before an orchid ever reaches the shop floor.

Bernhard Orchids has specialized in Phalaenopsis since 2007, combining advanced technology – such as internal transport systems and camera-based sorting – with a dedicated team focused on high standards.
Sustainability at Scale
Originally founded near Amsterdam, the Bernhard family relocated to Luttelgeest in the Noordoostpolder in 1972 following the company's growth. Today, the nursery produces over 200 Phalaenopsis varieties year-round, ranging from trusted classics to exclusive selections personally sourced by owner Simon Bernhard during his annual trips to Taiwan. Each plant reflects that careful curation.

What makes Bernhard Orchids especially impressive is their commitment to sustainability. Their 'Elegant Phalaenopsis' line is grown entirely with zero-energy (energy-neutral), powered by geothermal heat and supported by more than 50,000 (floating) solar panels. It’s a powerful example of how large-scale production and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
The World’s Favorite Houseplant
Did you know that this moth orchid has long been the number one houseplant worldwide? Loved for its elegant shape, rich color range (from white and soft salmon to bold purple and sunny yellow), and impressive flowering time, it’s easy to see why this classic continues to charm.
Within Decorum’s collection alone, over 1,500 premium plants and flowers are available, cultivated by growers who master their craft to the highest standards. The Phalaenopsis plays a starring role, represented by multiple growers, each offering distinct styles, sizes, and colors, proving its versatility.
