Alejandro Salas of Dia Uno Floral Studio laughs as he reflects on his unexpected path into the wedding industry, noting that if the entire population of children in any country were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, only about 0.0001% would probably say they wanted to be a florist. Make sure to tune into his story in this week's florist special.
How Flowers Helped Alejandro Salas Discover His Passion and Start Dia Uno Floral Studio
Born in Mexico with a degree in Communications and a specialization in Film, Alejandro Salas never intended to become a floral designer. Yet life, as it often does, led him exactly where he was meant to be. He recalls that the moment someone truly meant to work with flowers touches one, the reaction is instant and irreversible – a complete, almost instinctive pull toward them. That moment marked the beginning of Dia Uno, his floral studio founded on emotion, intuition, and floral art.
Alejandro in his element
For the floral designer, the real reward in wedding floristry is the constant discovery that comes with working through form, texture, and color, and the pleasure of being surrounded by scent every day. Still, his work reaches beyond decoration. He views each wedding as a story with its own rhythm and meaning. Dia Uno, as he calls it, represents that exact instant when two lives intersect and something new begins – not past or future, just the precise moment when a family is born.

He often describes his role as that of a narrator, where he shares:
"Imagine having the chance to be the narrator of one of the most important stories in a couple’s life. Eight to ten continuous moments of being part of something that will remain etched in the couple’s photographic memory, in their hearts, and in ours."
At Weddings, Flowers Become an Artistic Element
Context is a key component of Alejandro's design philosophy. In every design, he looks at flowers as emotional and structural pillars that influence how a place is experienced. He sees them as both architectural and artistic components that give atmosphere shape at every wedding.
In order to make sure that every sculpture captures the essence of the location, he frequently collects plants, twigs, and native vegetation directly from the surroundings. Every component he uses has a function, which is to expand and interpret the story the design is telling for every couple.
Oaxaca - A Floral Moment That'll Stay With Him Forever
When asked what his most memorable wedding experience was, Alejandro quickly recalls a project in Oaxaca. He is deeply tied to his Mexican background and values the region's ancestral traditions as well as the skill that goes into each handmade piece. He remembers how meaningful it was to collaborate with local craftspeople, giving their creations a central place in his floral designs. For him, the moment his arrangements blended with those age-old vases and art pieces was unforgettable – his pulse raced as he witnessed his modern work mixed with shapes that existed long before him.

He shares with the world:
"Our flowers will always seek to tell authentic stories of real people."
