What started as a humble mother-daughter duo has blossomed into a full creative team. Ferrell and Marydee Richardson have worked out of apartments, basements, back alleys, and shared spaces, but now they've finally found their home in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, and they could not be happier to share their floral journey up until now.

The Birth of The Cottage Rose

Whatever type of floral party you dream of, Ferrell and her team can make it a reality. The Cottage Rose is a floral and event design studio known for artful, eco-conscious arrangements that mix seasonal flowers with a design-forward aesthetic.

More impressively, it is a boutique floral and event design studio based in the Crossroads neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. Specializing in thoughtfully curated florals for weddings, events, and creative projects, the studio also offers custom floral orders by appointment and hosts intimate gatherings and elopements in its charming micro event space. With a refined yet artistic approach, The Cottage Rose brings an elevated sense of detail to every occasion they touch.

The team is passionate about using local flowers, foraged elements, and eco-conscious techniques – including a commitment to eliminating floral foam in all of their arrangements. Their dedication to green practices is matched only by their love of design.

Who's Behind the Team

The Cottage Rose team views floral design as a high art, drawing on their experiences in architecture and art. Using color theory, scale, contrast, and balance as a guide, each arrangement is created as a visual composition. Their designs combine a designer's vision with the beauty of nature, feeling both deliberate and expressive. Know more about the magicians behind the team!

Ferrell Richardson – Creative Director + Co-Owner

Ferrell is a graduate from KU with a Master's in Architecture. She loves puzzles, sunshine, iced dirty chai, thrifting, and riding bikes. Her mom and business partner of 10+ years is retiring, and she's taking over the business. A little bit nervous but super excited to make it her own and continue The Cottage Rose legacy, which officially started in the late 90’s but really began to thrive with both of us in 2015.

Marydee Richardson – Studio Manager + Owner

Marydee graduated from Kent State with a Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art with emphasis in Printmaking and Design. She loves walks in the woods, wine, campfires on her deck, road trips, and gardening. And now, she's leaving her legacy to her talented daughter for floral success.

Kat Richardson and Dalton Shumaker - Day of Coordinator

Kat loves (nut-free) baked goods, painting, hiking, antiquing, stargazing, and a good bonfire. She'd definitely rather be outside! Dalton, on the other hand, loves reality TV, makeup, champagne, the beach, and a good mani-pedi. She's always the planner, never the bride.

What to Expect From The Cottage Rose

The team will start with a short questionnaire to determine your floral and decor needs. A general proposal is then drafted showing pricing and options to see if they are a good fit for you. They hold your date open for a week once the initial proposal is sent. Ferrell and her team operate on a first come first serve basis, and they only take one wedding per weekend.

Kind words from a customer included:

"Ferrell made our wedding vision become a reality! She was an absolute dream to work with – communication was 10/10, she listened to what we wanted and offered ideas and suggestions along the way. We shared our overall vision and color palette, and she took it from there, creating something even more beautiful and unique than we could have imagined. The whole weekend, our guests couldn’t stop talking about the flowers – they were the perfect statement pieces we wanted."
