Gebr. Valstar
Gebr. Valstar B.V. was founded in 1978 when the founder, Jac. Valstar began cultivating Marantaceae in Honselersdijk. Currently, Gebr. Valstar (Oscar and Jörgen) have nurseries in Maasland (headquarters), Roosendaal, and Brazil. Over a surface area of around 10 hectares, the unusual plant Calathea is cultivated. What makes this plant so special is its circadian rhythm: the leaves close up when it gets dark and open again at dawn.
Gebr. Valstar is not only a supplier of Calathea, but they also breed and propagate them. Oscar and Jörgen have produced several unique varieties that only they cultivate! Regularly, the people of Gebr. Valstar travel to Brazil to search for new varieties of this decorative plant. They can be found in the jungle, where the Calathea family originates from. We don’t know how many varieties there are in the wild, but each ‘Calathea expedition’ finds attractive, new, commercial varieties.
