As spring kicks into full gear, Villa Curcuma is already approaching its peak activity. The first few weeks of this new season look promising, shares grower Dean Zuidgeest. His greenhouse is home to seven varieties of cut Curcuma, vibrant tropical flowers that are steadily gaining popularity in the luxury segment of the cut flower market.

A Vibrant Selection

“Our greenhouse is now about halfway in production,” Zuidgeest explains. “We started four weeks ago, and our offerings are expanding daily.” Villa Curcuma supplies cut Curcuma in shades of white, yellow, purple, pink, and cerise, with a particular focus on pink hues. Besides cut versions, they also grow Curcuma in pots on a smaller scale.

While no new varieties have been introduced this season, special attention is given to the Curcuma Splendid, a pink type added to the lineup last year. This season, it’s available in larger quantities. “It’s a real beauty,” Zuidgeest notes. “A large flower with bold color. We want to keep it exclusive, so we’re not mass-producing it.”

The Power of White

The standout variety remains the white Curcuma Siam Shine. “White has been on the rise in recent years, especially since we're right in the middle of event season,” Zuidgeest explains. “That color fits perfectly with those markets and is also often used for dyeing.”

Market Demand

Interest in Curcuma is strong. “Even before we’re in full production, we get calls asking if they’re available yet. That’s a great sign,” Zuidgeest remarks. The demand peaks around Mother’s Day, which he considers their most important holiday.

Curcuma is also popular for weddings, though requests often come at the last minute. “Especially from the Middle East, we sometimes receive large orders on very short notice. That’s a challenge for a small-scale grower like us, but also an opportunity to serve a niche market.”

Decorum Label as a Quality Seal

Villa Curcuma is a member of Decorum Plants & Flowers, the quality label for leading growers. All Curcuma flowers traded under the Decorum logo meet strict standards, ensuring consistent quality, excellent shelf life, and a professional presentation - exactly what the industry demands.

A Natural Look

Sometimes, there’s a request for dyed flowers. “I’m not a big fan of that,” Zuidgeest admits. “I prefer natural colors. But the demand is there,” he adds. The dyeing process is outsourced to a specialized company.

A Future Full of Color

Villa Curcuma remains true to its core: small-scale, specialized, and committed to quality. The upcoming season promises a wealth of beautiful blooms - flowers that bring both vibrant color and stories and experiences.

Did you know that the name Siam refers to the origin of the Curcuma - Thailand, where the wild species naturally occurs. KP Holland, a renowned Dutch breeder with an international reputation, bred this particular cultivar.

I am always on the lookout for new flowers, specialties, novelties, and products coming into the season. Working in the Dutch flower industry enables me to see the prettiest flowers in the world, and I can say I really love it!
